May 2012: What's new this month

Welcome to the North Cotswold Ornithological Society (Registered charity number 1127045) Gloucestershire’s only survey-based bird group. We are dedicated to learning more about the birds of the Cotswolds through developing an understanding of their distribution. On these pages you will find more about what we do and how you can get involved.

20 May Long Day Count

A more relaxed version of the Short Day Count. All our summer visitors should be back, so pick a favourite 10km square, start as early as you like and see how many you can find in the day.  Meet at 3pm at the Seven Tuns pub at Chedworth to compare notes.  To reach the pub, from Fields Road, between the A429 (Cirencester to Stow) road and The Whiteway (Withington to Cirencester road), take the turning to north signposted Chedworth & Yanworth (ignore signs to Lower Chedworth): SP053120

26 May - Nightjars (we hope!)

This is a Saturday late afternoon/evening meeting in the Forest of Dean primarily to see Nightjars but also other woodland birds.  Beginning with a late afternoon walk to look for Wood Warblers and other Forest specialities.  Meet in the car park by the Visitor Centre of the RSPB Nagshead Reserve (SO606085) at 5:00pm. Hannah Morton (Warden) has kindly agreed to open the Centre for us and will give us an indication of what’s around in the reserve.

Following the walk we will travel to the Rising Sun (Moseley Green, Parkend, Lydney, Gloucestershire. GL15 4HN  Tel: 01594 562008 Grid Ref SO631 086) for something to eat.  Those who cannot make the afternoon walk are welcome to join us there at 7:30pm, or if coming just for the nightjars, please meet us at the Rising Sun no later than 9:00pm.  Be prepared for a chilly evening, bring a torch and you may need insect repellent.

Peregrines at Cheltenham

The Peregrines at Cheltenham have laid eggs and there are links to videos on the Peregrines page.

Past sightings

To let you know what you might be able to see in the Cotswolds we are starting to compile a list of past sightings by members. The first two months (May & June 2011) are available on the Past Sightings page (tab on the left)

The NCOS Blog

Yes we have one - you can find the link on the left. There's not much there at present (just a welcome from me) but there will be content added over the coming days (weeks....., months...., years....!) so do come back and look at the ramblings and musings
